Death of John Souter

March 3rd 1897

John Souter, who lived at Stronchavie between Kirkmichael and Pitlochry, was a cattle drover.

He had attended a stock sale at Moulin that day and in the evening he left to walk the seven miles back to his home.

A severe snowstorm was blowing and about four miles from Pitlochry, Mr Souter collapsed in the snow. He was discovered by a roadman the next day.

Beside the road where he was found is a stone inscribed with the following message.

'In memory of John Souter who perished here in a snowstorm. March 3rd.
Erected by a few friends.'
