Royalists overcome Coventanter superiority

On Sunday September 1st the Duke of Montrose, with some 3,000 men, engages the Covenanting army under Lord Elcho at Tibbermuir. The Covenanters have a force of around 7,000 infantry with 700 horse. In spite of their superior numbers, the Covenanters are comprehensively defeated and are pursued right to the gates of Perth some three miles away.

The town itself surrenders that same evening at about nine o’clock, and the Royalist forces with Montrose remain for the next three days. They procure necessary supplies but have little success in persuading recruits to join their forces.

On the following Wednesday, the army moves out of Perth and marches to Collace, a small village in the Sidlaws.
